Portland Maine Soccer -- Maine Masters Soccer League (MMSL) and Southern Maine Soccer League (SMSL) have joined together to form Southern Maine United Soccer League (SMUSL).
What this means to the team managers and players:
- 1 League, 2 Divisions: There will be two divisions in the SMUSL: Open Division and Over 30 Division. Both divisions will be independent of each other including matches, stats standings and playoffs.
- Rules & Processes - Each league's set of rules from last year will be carried over to each of the divisions.
- Game times/locations: There will be no changes in this process as of this year.
- The league website will now be: www.smusl.com - all stats, standings, voting, rosters and communication will be here.
What this means to the league itself:
- A board of directors needs to be elected. The exact positions needed are still being discussed.
- This doubles the number of players in the league making it the largest in Maine. By doing so we are hoping to attract more players to grow the league and ultimately, grow soccer in Maine.
Some ideas for the future:
- SMUSL Cup - (similar to England's FA Cup) - A single elimination tournament where teams are drawn at random and would play 'cup" games on predetermined dates.
- Have the winner of the SMUSL Cup play the winner of Bay State in Massachusetts.
- Over 30 "b" division
- Over 40 division
- COED division (minimum number of women on the field).
